I’ve always enjoyed early morning sounds. Night is over, the sun is on its way, a whole, new day opens up before me. Who knows the possibilities?
When I was a child, I heard the chunk of wood being poked into a cookstove, the clink of a coffee pot and then I smelled the aroma of frying bacon.
Now, I hear cars on the Interstate, a truck shifting gears, the whistle of the train. The sound of a busy town waking up, people going to work or coming home after a night shift, travelers passing through town.
In the yard, the early-bird robins and doves announce they are ready for another day of searching for worms and feeding babies. My coffeepot gurgles to tell me the Folgers is steaming.
Nemo munches on a bone, ready for new adventures. Maybe, just maybe, today will be the day he’ll catch that pesky squirrel. But, if he does, what in the world will he do with it?
Speaking of squirrels, a couple of evenings ago, I sat on the porch swing and Nemo’s bark prodded a nervous squirrel into a headlong dash. The squirrel flung himself onto the deck rail. I glimpsed a flurry of flying fur heading toward me but thankfully, the terrified rodent jumped onto a tree limb before we collided.
So begins another beautiful June day. I’m thankful for it.
