Last Day of Free Book

Last Day of Free Book

All day today until midnight, The Cemetery Club is free as an ebook on Amazon. If you haven’t gotten your copy yet, now’s the time! Last chance!

On a dark night, I would be looking for a light, wouldn’t you? If I were lost in a strange country, a map would be at the top of my needs.

Were you ever inside a cave? If you were, you know that you cannot see your hand in front of your face. Long years ago, my husband, son and I took a tram ride deep into a silver mine in Colorado. When we were quite a way beneath the earth’s surface, our guide turned out all lights. Wow! Panic time! I had no idea of directions and if I had to depend on myself to get out of that place, I would have been up a stump!

May I tell you right now that I do not like caves nor mines. Remember that old song, “Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines, It’s dark as a dungeon way down in the mines.”

My point is we need leaders with gumption enough to get us out of scary places and knowledge enough to guide us as we journey through dark places. Where are those leaders today?

As I look at the disarray in Baltimore and other places around the world, I wonder where are the leaders? Are they the loud, raucous voices bellowing that destroying things is the right way to go? Are they the ones that young people follow? If they follow, where will they end up?

When I was a child, way back in the 1950s, we had people to look up to. We had movies and books with heroes and heroines who knew right from wrong and the right always triumphed. Does anybody remember Wonder Woman, Nancy Drew, Roy and Dale, Gene Autry, Hop-Along Cassidy? Remember reading about George Guess (Sequoyah), Chief Joseph, George Washington Carver? These people were leaders. They were lights we could follow. They exemplified courage in the face of overwhelming odds, curiosity that lead to scientific advancement, role models.

And then, there were our dads and moms. Believe me, my parents knew where we were, when we were coming home, and what we planned to do while we were out. We had guidelines and we knew consequences. Dads and Moms should be the lights we can safely follow. Mine were.

Nehemiah was a leader with a great deal of faith and a great deal of common sense. A formidable task faced Nehemiah–the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall. Enemies surrounded him and his people. The Israelites were badly out-numbered and discouraged. Did Nehemiah try to compromise or understand his  enemies’ viewpoint and make excuses for them? No. He prayed. He armed his workmen. He ordered that the workers should have a builder’s tool in one hand and a sword in the other. If someone noticed approaching danger, he blew a trumpet and the others rushed to his aid. We need leadership today, out-spoken, fearless and sure. We need candles in the darkness. Where are they?
