Camouflage

Camouflage

We all looked pretty normal, those of us at the NWA Writers’ Workshop in Fayetteville yesterday. Just glancing at us, nobody would suspect that we wore camouflage, that behind the friendly smiles lurked other people–the creators of other worlds, excitement, danger and daring deeds. On second thought, we would have been suspect because after all, that’s what writers do.

Fog blessed us again. And rain and chilly temperatures but last year’s workshop was colder. Patches of snow still lay on the ground at that  March meeting.

However, during the noon hour, a bright ray of sunshine filled the whole big conference room. Dayla and her girls paid my book table and me a visit. And they truly caused a stir as we sat munching our sandwiches. Children have a tendency to bring life and excitement with them and I think there were smiles on more faces than mine at this happy visit. Thank you, Dayla, for dropping in.

Visiting with other writers is always fun. They come from all kinds of backgrounds and write all kinds of books. It’s an eye opener to see what others are doing.

The camouflage that we wore was the facade of living only in this real world when actually we live in our fictional world too. But, you know, everyone wears camouflage to a certain extent. We ask one another how we are and we answer, “Fine”. In reality, we may have sorrows, worries, fears and a lot of trouble that no one sees. I’m glad that we can go to the Lord, discard the outer trappings and tell Him all those things that are inside. Before our Creator, nobody wears camouflage and that’s great!
