A Valentine for My Country

A Valentine for My Country

If I could, I would give a Valentine to my country, the United States of America. Even though I am fearful of the direction this old Ship of State is going, I have faith, not in men but in God, that we will once again turn to Him as our Captain and He will steer us away from those perils of the sea, seen and unseen, that threaten to divide and tear us apart.

I love our Constitution, this plan written so many years ago by men who I believe were directed by God, as a map to guide us through uncharted waters. I admire their dedication to truth, independence, individual liberty, and their determination not to be shackled to a king but to make their own way, govern by their own decisions, and who were willing to give up everything they owned for the sake of freedom for themselves and those who would come after. I admire their wisdom as they looked far into the future and tried to think of those things that might be out there.

From east to west, from north to south, the United States of America stretches across every sort of terrain and climate. Its dazzling mountains, rich green forests, deserts and farmland show the work of a Master creator and its people! I can’t find enough adjectives to praise the determination, courage, friendliness, generosity and warmth of the citizens of this land.

We have endured wars, heartbreak, the Great Dust Bowl, financial failures, personal loss, but we raised our heads, looked to Heaven, squared our shoulders and went on. Something within us warms us, encourages us, causes us to hope and do our best to make that hope a reality. Something within us will not give up, will not abandon the truths upon which we were founded. It’s as if the patriots of the past are watching, reminding us of what they have given, and trusting us to carry on the Republic in which they firmly believed.

So, America, I just wanted to pause a moment this morning and say, I believe in you. I pray that we will remember the rock from whence we were hewn. When storms come and they seem to come with more frequency and violence, when our ship is tossed and in danger of sinking, I pray that we will look to God, reaffirm our belief in His ability to bring us through, and face the future unafraid. America, I love you.
