Whence Cometh Thou?

Whence Cometh Thou?

As you read the three Darcy and Flora cozies, do you ever stop to wonder why the characters act as they do, where they’re coming from? Do you ever recognize yourself in one or two of the characters and realize the answer to the question, Whence Cometh Thou? In the first book, The Cemetery Club, Darcy is simply a newly-widowed investigative reporter, come home. Flora is her mom, living quietly in the old farmhouse in a small Oklahoma town. They have no idea they will be involved in a murder but they have no choice. Flora has nothing but bad thoughts for the chief villain who killed her old friend but at the end of the book, doubts creep in.

In the second mystery, Grave Shift, Flora of course feels a sympathy with the woman whose daughter is missing. This sympathy leads them into trouble. And I certainly understand Pat’s feelings of nervousness and her back and forth attitude about getting her family involved. I might have felt the same way.

And in Best Left Buried,  I feel Darcy’s shock and dismay when she discovers a secret kept since World War I. When someone accuses her of murder, well, I am just appalled!

It’s always interesting and amusing to hear what fans say about the series. “I couldn’t put it down.” “I was scared to death.” “Please write a book with no murders, next time.” Those phrases are actually music to a mystery writer’s ears.
