Coffee With Words, Please

Coffee With Words, Please

Yesterday’s blog was about words and their power. Later that day, my co-author Barbara Burgess and I sat down with a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll and talked.  Words, like the coffee and good fellowship, flowed. With the publication date of our three Darcy and Flora cozy mysteries nearing, it was time to reminisce a little.

My neighbor who lived right across the street, Levern Jones, introduced Barbara to me several years ago.

“I have another friend who writes,” Levern said. “I’d like you to meet her.”

So, one day over coffee and orange Danish rolls at a tea room in Rogers, we three, Levern, Barbara, and I sat and discussed the possibility of collaborating on a book. The final result, many months later, was the publication of The Cemetery Club, our first co-authored book. Grave Shift and Best left Buried were to follow.

Of course, yesterday’s discussion centered around the books and our excitement about their upcoming release. A whole lot of thought, what-ifs, writes and re-writes went into the pages, as well as a whole lot of Barbara and a whole lot of me. You’ll notice that yesterday a cup of coffee accompanied our visit, just as it did several years ago in the tea room in Rogers. And, you’ll also notice in the three cozies, Darcy and Flora have a real liking for coffee. But, that is not to say that our sleuths are our clones. No way! Those ladies have minds of their own and they use them to get out of tight places, elude dastardly people, and solve mysteries. In fact, I am sometimes amazed at their courage. But then, sometimes I am also dismayed at their lack of caution.

Mechanics use a distinct set of tools in their chosen profession. Carpenters need an entirely different set. Doctors, geologist, nuclear scientists and computer whizzes rely on tools of the trade to accomplish their goals. I would be up a stump with any of those tools, but I feel right at home with mine. Writers use words. And coffee.
