Happy first day of winter and the shortest day of the year! For those of you who are counting (and I know you are out there) the days will very slowly begin to lengthen now until around March 21, they’ll be equal in length to the nights again. Isn’t that great?
My mother didn’t like the shorter winter days because she so enjoyed longer, sunnier days and warm weather. So, I’d always remind her that after December 21, the days would get longer and that was a good thing!
Today doesn’t look like the first day of winter, but it certainly feels like it. The thermometer is shivering around twenty-six degrees. And, sad to say, the wind seems to be picking up.
Squirrels are out trying to find a tasty bite of breakfast. They don’t seem to be too fond of the acorns that are all around them. They prefer seeds–namely, black sunflower seeds straight from the bird feeder. Squirrels are frisky, cute, frustrating and smart! They finally found a way to outsmart the squirrel-proof bird feeder but, hopefully, I have out-smarted them. They’ve found that by not putting a paw on the perch that closes the opening to the seeds and reaching over gingerly with their mouths, they can slip one seed at a time out of the feeder. To try to thwart that, I’ve rubbed the shepherd’s crook that the feeder hangs from, with Crisco. The squirrels start up the metal crook and slide right back to the ground!
Yesterday, I baked cranberry/cheese bread and made a batch of the old-fashioned fudge-the kind you beat until your arm threatens to stop working. Today, I feel may be a good cookie-baking day. And, what are your plans for the day?
Good for you! I’m not much of a cook, so I buy desserts for our Christmas celebration. It’s a tradition we also order Chinese food on that day.
That sounds yummy to me!
