Unsung Heroines

Today, I’d like to offer an imaginary armload of flowers to the stay-at-home mom. In doing so, I do not, in any way, diminish the role of mothers who hold down an outside job and yet are successful in their primary role of being mothers. There are many women who handle both jobs efficiently.

My admiration, mixed with awe, is for those women who choose to stay home with their children, rather than work at an outside job. This has got to be a mutual agreement between husband and wife that they will forego many of the extras in order to always be available for their kids.  Choosing to stay home means going without a lot of the things that people take for granted, but they do it willingly and don’t consider this a sacrifice.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I fully am aware that some women choose to work at two jobs–home and a salaried occupation–and handle both beautifully. My hat is off to you and also to those single moms who would like to stay home but must work to keep their children fed and clothed. In no way am I denigrating your dual roles. I recognize your hard work and sacrifice.

But in today’s political and economic climate, the stay-at-home mom is often over-looked or looked down upon. This should not happen. So, this morning, I express my admiration for these women who forego societal pressure, follow their hearts, and find fulfillment and joy in the role they have chosen.

  1. Yes, it’s not easy to make that choice.
