This is another rainy morning and earlier, it was a rainy, stormy morning with thunder booming around the clouds. My pal Nemo the Furry One is not a fan of storms. Since his hearing is almost non-existent, he isn’t afraid of those loud sounds any more, but I’m convinced that he feels atmospheric change or perhaps an electrical charge. If it’s raining, he’s suspicious. There just could be thunder lurking and it may pounce out at him any moment.
His usual morning routine is to go outdoors and take care of business, first thing. This morning when I opened the door, he stood looking at the downpour, looked at me, backed up and said, “You gotta be kidding.”
So, I obligingly closed the door and sat down to write. A few minutes later, here he was again at the door and I knew from the look on his face that an emergency was pending. So, I opened the door and he was torn. He needed to go out but he didn’t want to go out. Rain was still pouring and rain isn’t to be trusted.
So, I stepped out on the deck with him and, under the shelter of the eaves, waited for him to complete his morning routine. Several times, he looked back at me to be sure I was still there, but he ventured bravely into the grass and, a few minutes later, greatly relieved, he returned to the deck and the security of the house.
That’s the way it is when you’re a person of short legs, a furry body, and a mostly courageous temperment. Braving the unknown is hard but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
Sweet Nemo! What a trooper. He know that when the going gets tough …
Thanks, Kimberly. Yes, he is quite a trooper.
Such a cutie! Buster hates the rain, but holds off on going out then until he can’t handle it anymore!
I understand. He and Nemo are brothers under the skin.
That’s a cute doggie! My senior lab is afraid of thunder, but she will go out if I am with her. The other day, it was thundering and raining and she heard a baby cry. Out through the thunder and rain she went to check on that baby. It was the neighbor’s baby in the car. Once she found out it was okay, she came back into the house. Dogs are amazing.
Now, that is what I call courageous! She forgot her own fear to check out why this little one was crying. I hope that we all would have courage like this in the face of fear or danger. Thanks for writing, Linda. That would make a good devotional reading.
