When April showers may come your way
They bring the flowers that bloom in May
So when it’s raining have no regrets
Because it isn’t raining rain you know
It’s raining violets
This Judy Garland song by Silvers and DeSylva would certainly fit this morning. A gentle rain is falling and, sure enough, wild violets are opening their eyes and looking around at springtime.
Speaking of Judy Garland, a dear friend of hers, Mickey Rooney, has passed away. It always makes me sad to see people I’ve known about, seen in some really good movies, and remember as being young and energetic, grow old and die. It reminds me that no matter what our level of fame, whether we are world-renown or not, life is tenuous and our bodies don’t last long. Even at age 93, as Mr. Rooney was, when viewed in the light of eternity, is not a long time.
Do you ever miss the old movies, even the really old black and whites? On TCM, the other night, I saw a good one: “Angels in the Outfield”. I didn’t hear any cursing. I didn’t see any nudity or provocative scenes. I just saw an interesting story line, a good plot, and exemplary acting.
So, as I sip a steaming hot (whew! I didn’t know it was that hot) cup of caramel drizzle coffee, and look out at a wet, sleepy world, I wonder what the day will bring. I hope these April Showers awaken, not only the violets, but your enthusiasm for all things good and beautiful and lasting, and perhaps refresh your love of reading. What better way to spend the day, or at least a few hours in the day, than curled up in your favorite chair with a good book. Might I suggest a cozy mystery?
