Tuesday Tidbits and Thunderstorms

Tuesday Tidbits and Thunderstorms

This tiny wildflower has finally made its appearance in lawns across this part of the country. I used to call them Johnny Jump-Ups but my mother gently informed me the small, four-petaled bloom is a bluet. They carpeted the hill east of the house at Manos Meadows. They are here in NW Arkansas too  and I imagine they have been adding their special charm to springtime ever since the Lord planted them, because that’s the way I think of wildflowers, God’s flowers. Now I know that He fashioned roses and gladioli too, just as he made chickens and parakeets but to me, wild birds, flowers, and animals are more particularly God’s. Maybe it’s because they can’t rely on people for protection; they have to rely on God.

Yesterday morning as I looked out of my window on the world, I saw one of my favorite birds, a flicker. Looking closer, I saw there were three flickers on my front lawn, picking at bugs or something in the grass. Flickers are part of the woodpecker family. They wear a neat, black vest and a red spot on their heads, and they help gardeners and farmers by eating harmful insects.

Last night, a loud boom sort of whomped the patio door. What was it? Thunder? An earthquake? A short time later, that mystery was solved when rain pelted the deck, accompanied by more thunder and lightning. March went out with a bang.

When I see lightning split the sky and hear the rattle of thunder, I’m reminded of how we, like the birds and animals, rely on God for protection. People, with that God-breathed inner concern for others, do our best to help where we see the need, but really, our only defense against all harm, both natural and man-made, comes from the One who created us. How do I know? The Bible tells me so. It’s a good thing that Scripture never grows old and never wears out because I repeat it a lot. It reminds me of how small I am and how Great God is; therefore, I should not be afraid.

There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways” (Psalm 91:11-12).
