As Dinah Washington sang, “What a Difference a Day Makes.” Yesterday, the children had a great time in my back yard. Matt, Dawn, and I sat on the deck and nobody needed a coat. Today, my whole yard, the deck, every rock and blade of grass, the intrepid little early flowers, all are covered with ice! Now, I’m worried about the robins! Why did they come back so early? Their bills don’t look like ice breakers to me so if there are worms somewhere in the ground, how will they find them? Maybe they can subsist on sunflowers seeds. I can only hope so.
I found a comforting Scripture in Psalm 147:17-18, “He casteth forth his ice like morsels…He sendeth out his word, and melteth them.”
So, one of these days, the sun is bound to shine again. Flowers will meet a friendlier welcome, and we’ll talk about the winter that was! However, ice is to be taken seriously and I pray for everyone’s safety. It is treacherous, sometimes lying in wait incognito, for someone to step on it and take a tumble. And remember, it is really a good reason to pour another cup of coffee, sit down in front of the fireplace, and, from the comfort of your armchair (and with a friendly although mysterious book) lose yourself in the adventures of Darcy and Flora!
