A Snowy, Blowy Day

A Snowy, Blowy Day

What a winter morning! It is nineteen degrees. Snow is falling. Again. It is coming down to join an already snow and ice-packed earth. Tree trunks and mailbox posts are black, the sky is a soft, blurry gray, and snow is falling.  The world is mostly black and white, with a few browns and greens here and there. A little snow bird lights on my crepe myrtle and peers in my window to see if I can do anything about the situation. The only thing I can do is re-fill the feeder in back and my bird seed is getting low. They may have to subsist on cornbread if I’m not able to drive to the store. As I said, what a winter morning!

I had a funny dream, having to do with birds and cold weather. I dreamed that two birds, a cardinal and a robin had gone to sleep for the night in a small, wooden box which resembled one of my bird feeders. But, alas! When morning came, they were frozen. I went in the house and got a heating pad and put it against the box. I remembered to turn it on low and leave it for only a few minutes at a time so they wouldn’t get over-heated. Did that work? Did the birds thaw out? Wouldn’t you know, I woke up before finding out.

Did I mention that the wind is blowing? Oh, it isn’t like a blizzard, but there is enough of a breeze to seriously add to the chill. My heart goes out to those who have to work  in the cold today, but many people will. This is one of those days that will help us appreciate spring, that season of the year that is surely out there, but which seems, right now, to be a long time away.

  1. I hope you’re going to write “the rest of the story!” Inquiring minds need to know how things ended for those poor birds!
