I don’t get much in my mailbox any more–I don’t mean my virtual mailbox, but the actual metal box where the mailman stops almost every day. Oh, lots of advertisements find their way there and bills, and flyers, but very few letters. Times have changed! But yesterday, I got the neatest, fat, colorful envelope from my dear friend Linda’s grandchildren. Even the stamps were pretty and inside was a picture of that precious family and some hand-drawn pictures by the little girls. What a day brightener!
Last night, Sara and Nathan were here when Matt and Dawn came over. I had supper underway so the kitchen was full of good smells that included homemade cheesy biscuits. Outside, rain poured, lightning flashed and thunder crashed but inside was warmth, good food, and family. Nothing could have been better. It was an evening and a feeling that I’ve tucked away in my “good memory box” for safe keeping.
I wonder, as I travel along life’s highway, what memories I’ll leave for others? Will there be special times that they will think of? Will they remember encouraging words and gentle hands that soothed a few hurts? Will they get a few laughs out of absurd moments?
As St. Paul said, “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).
And yesterday’s warm memories? Well, I believe St. Paul would approve.
