Rain is falling steadily on my little corner of Arkansas but that’s OK. So far, the temperature is above freezing although we do have a freezing rain/ice warning going. Believe it or not, thunder woke me last night, echoing around the heavens and bouncing off the clouds. That must have been the arriving cold air meeting the warm air but not getting a hospitable reception. I remember a cute children’s song of years gone by: Two little clouds went out to play when stormy was the weather. They flounced about and bounced about, ’til bump, they came together.
Of course, that’s what caused the rain. I don’t believe that is meteorologically sound and wouldn’t stand up under scientific scrutiny, but that’s the way I think of it, especially when one cloud is warm and the other, cold.
My dog came in this morning with wet paws which transferred to muddy prints on my kitchen floor but that’s OK too. Let’s face it–he hasn’t yet learned to wipe his feet and until he does, I can get a hernia from rushing for the mop and paper towels each time he comes in or shrug and decide I’ll mop later. I chose the latter.
All is quiet, serene, peaceful and I’m thankful. The Christmas tree glows, the rain drips, and the fireplace sputters. The older I get, the more I treasure these simple things, things that have no price.
I’ve changed my mind about a lot of things as I age. I don’t even mind that word “age” any more, although I would hate to hear the word “old” applied to me. Fine wine ages, doesn’t it? Lovely, antique furniture only grows more valuable as it ages. In some cultures, age is venerated and honored. Why? Because, of course, wisdom goes right along with age and you can’t rush something as important as wisdom.
I found some neat quotes the other day and the writer remained anonymous, so I’ll change them just a bit and write a few here. I agree with them. The Older I get.. the more I realize that the feeling of warmth and love that is a part of Christmas should remain with us throughout the year; the more I value time spent with family, just sitting and talking; the more I treasure Christmas ornaments given with loving hearts; the more I realize the infinite patience and love of God; the more I enjoy a warm hug; the more I look forward to visits from friends and family; the more I like a hot (not warm), strong cup of fresh-made coffee; the more I respect really good writing; the more grateful I am for the gift of writing; the less I think about the latest fashion or the largest house; the dearer my family grows; the more I like just sitting and talking with like-minded people; the easier it is to live life with an attitude of gratitude; the more I stand in awe of the God of the universe who left a perfect place called Heaven to come to this sinful earth to offer me eternal life.
