I Remember Once Upon a Time…

“The Spirit of man is the candle of the Lord…” (Proverbs 20:27). A candle brings light into dark places. It may be very small but in a black night, the brightness of one small candle is light indeed.

Bible truth is light shining in a dark world. Now, a light reveals good and it also reveals evil. I don’t think that wickedness would want to be revealed; I believe it would rather operate under cover of darkness, but there is that light–God’s Word–and it uncovers everything–shining on people’s deeds and words, whether they are good or bad.

I remember way back in the old days when I was an undergraduate at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, one of my professors was discussing the freedoms we enjoy in the United States. He said our one absolute freedom is the freedom of thought.

If we think something is true, isn’t it natural to express what we believe in words? If we believe the Bible is God’s Word, and contains no errors, shouldn’t we be allowed to say we believe what He says? Didn’t the Constitution say we American citizens have the right of free speech? Or, are the Bible and Constitution simply pliable documents that change as we want them to change, so that no one’s feelings are hurt and everyone feels good about themselves?

I am not surprised that Duck Dynasty is in trouble with what is politically correct at the moment. The show is clean, wholesome, funny, and the family believes in Christ. It is sort of like a candle in the darkness of television shows. Now, if the family on Duck Dynasty spewed curse words, depended on foul-minded “jokes” for laughs, or espoused deviant life styles, you can bet there would be no controversy. But Phil Robertson was asked what he believed and when he honestly answered the question, it was not deemed politically correct. Phil believes the Bible and it seems to me that not only is his freedom of speech threatened but his freedom of thought is under attack as well. If Phil’s are under attack, so are ours.

The candle of the Lord–when the Lord searches the darkness, what does He find?
