A Frozen Sort of Day

The street in front of my house is mostly packed snow and ice. Schools are dismissed again and the temperature this morning hovers at twenty-four. The sky is only a little darker than the snow, sort of soft gray and there’s no sign of the sun. I’m sure it’s somewhere there in the east, about ready to pop above the horizon but there’s no hint of it. With just a little bit of a shove, I believe those clouds would open and spill more snowflakes. It’s that kind of morning.

A 4.5 earthquake shook Oklahoma City Saturday and a smaller one was felt in Edmond, yesterday. That’s unusual for Oklahoma; or, rather, it used to be. In recent years, several earthquakes have been felt in that area, although I understand very small ones that no one detects go on all the time.

What do earthquakes have to do with a snowy, winter day? Probably nothing. But they, like all things meteorological, are interesting. They are part of our world and it pays to pay attention.

The cup of caramel drizzle coffee is particularly welcome on this winter wonderland day. Have you noticed how we appreciate contrasts? Now, I like a good cup of coffee just about any time but when the weather outside is frightful (according to the song), then the coffee and fireplace and comfort of a warm house is even more delightful. I think emotions and people interactions are like that. In times of bereavement, the kindness of friends and neighbors is even more appreciated. In times of illness, regaining one’s health brings gratitude for being well. In times of sadness, a friend who will just sit with me is the best thing in the world.

And, in turbulent, fearful, uncertain times, the laughter of children shines like a lamp in the window at night. I’m thankful for these contrasts, these ways the Lord has of cheering us and letting us know that cold weather doesn’t last forever. Spring will come. As the Bible says, weeping may last the night but joy comes in the morning.

So, I’m wishing you a day filled with gratitude for God’s blessings, a good fire to warm the outside, a steaming cup of coffee and the love of God to warm the inside, and good friends to stand beside you through any hardship you may be facing.
